Mission of Graduation Coach

  • Ensure the successful transition of all students from middle to high school, and high school to post-secondary education or the workforce.
  • Provide comprehensive prevention/ intervention programs for students at risk of grade retention and/or dropping out of school.
  • Identify students in need of additional support and work with them to achieve academic and social success.
  • Ensure that all identified students receive the resources and services needed to guide them toward graduation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for reducing behaviors that put students at risk of not graduating from high school.
  • An understanding of the multiplicity of community resources to support students at risk of not graduating.
  • Strong organizational skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Build relationships with students and families
  • Coordinate with the principal and counselor to meet with students in grades 9-12 to discuss graduation plan and timeline
  • Aid in the scheduling process so that students get the courses they need to graduate according to the timeline they established
  • Help students explore options and opportunities for education and job training after high school, i.e. arrange college or program visits, worksite visits, guest speakers, etc.
  • Be present in classrooms to offer support to students in the learning environment
  • Regularly meet with students individually to monitor their progress toward their academic and career goals
  • Monitor and document student progress related to attendance, grades, and behavior and regularly communicate with parents to update them on the student’s progress
  • Engage in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports practices to encourage attendance and engagement, reducing disciplinary actions, including ISS and OSS
  • Plan parent involvement events that promote school community and improve school culture
  • Provide students with alternative learning spaces on days they are unable to function well in the classroom, i.e. quiet space to work, time with counselor, etc.
  • Contribute celebrations of student achievements to school social media coordinator
  • Uses and analyzes data (achievement, attendance, behavior, credit accrual) to identify high school students with a high probability of not graduating.
  • Collaborates with students, parent(s)/guardian(s), teachers, counselors, and community partners to develop a graduation and achievement plan that includes the best program to meet academic and post-secondary goals.
  • Maintains a file for each student to include, but not limited to: transcripts, student assessments, individual graduation plan (end of 8th grade), documentation of meetings with parent(s)/guardian(s), documentation of individual student conferences, referrals for needed educational, and/or social services.
  • Provides students with appropriate post-secondary preparation, programs, and services.
  • Monitors grades attendance, behavior, credit accrual of students toward meeting graduation requirements.
  • Develops and implements individual, small group, and whole school preventative/intervention strategies to increase the likelihood that students will persist in school and graduate.
  • Communicates regularly with parent(s)/guardian(s), to discuss academic progress, obstacles, and needed efforts by students and parents; should include face-to-face contact, phone, e-mail, texts messages, newsletters, and other communication opportunities, as needed.
  • Connects students and their parents with appropriate tutoring support and credit or course recovery options.
